The Carri da Getto represent the defence of the Feudal Lord against the popular uprising, embodied by the Aranceri on foot. They are therefore the other essential element that allows the Battle of the Oranges to renew its historical and symbolic significance year after year. It is important to remember that friendship, camaraderie, fair play and joy are the values that inspire not only each individual team, but also the contest itself between those on the ground and those aboard the carts.
Over time, customs, rituals and throwing techniques have become firmly established, creating a true cultural heritage and a shared code of ethics. Drawn either by pairs of draught horses or by teams of four horses, the Carri da Getto carry Aranceri wearing leather masks and padded breastplates reminiscent of armour. They make their way through the town squares, courageously facing thousands of Aranceri on foot. Each cart bears a name rooted in the local medieval history and traditions. The world of the Carri da Getto is unique, rich in traditions and closely guarded knowledge passed down through generations of drivers and cart captains. Another defining element of each cart is the deep bond with its horses, cared for throughout the year with great dedication and adorned with finely crafted harnesses made by local artisans.
