The Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities. Here are just a few: a small selection of suggestions for sport and movement in nature, surrounded by an enchanting landscape.
Ivrea–Mombarone. Starting from Piazza Ottinetti in Ivrea, climbing all the way to the Colma del Mombarone and back down into Ivrea: a historic running race that is a contest both with others and with yourself.
Castlerun – Scalata al maniero. A competitive run open to all (adults and children alike) set against the evocative backdrop of the Cinque Laghi, finishing in the magnificent courtyard of the Castello di Montalto Dora.
Tavagnasco–Santa Maria Maddalena ai Piani. Since 1952, this mountain race has offered athletes 5 vertiginous kilometres culminating at 1,310 metres above sea level, on a panoramic terrace overlooking the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater.
Corsa dei 5 Laghi. A demanding and captivating 24-kilometre running race through the wooded moraine hills north of Ivrea, on a course immersed in the nature and greenery of the Five Lakes Park of Ivrea.
Giro del Lago Nero. From Borgofranco toward the Castello di Montalto Dora, then on to Lake Nero and back to Borgofranco: an exhilarating 8.4-kilometre running race.
Morenic Trail. For those who love a challenge: 110 kilometres of running with a maximum of 24 hours to traverse — solo, in pairs, or as a relay — the entire breathtaking perimeter of the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater.
Trailaghi. A trail run of nearly 25 kilometres and 900 metres of elevation gain — demanding and technical, yet thrilling and of great naturalistic interest: winding single tracks through woodland, peat bogs and breathtaking landscapes.
Tri@lake. A triathlon (both competitive and amateur) that breaks the mould: swimming, running and mountain biking for an intense day of sport in the unique setting of three of the Five Lakes of Ivrea.
Andrate Nordic Walking. A paradise for Nordic walking: paths and mule tracks between Andrate (839 m) and the Mombarone (2,371 m) offer walkers an unspoilt ecosystem of rare beauty.
50 km dell’Erbaluce. 50 demanding kilometres for a mountain bike Gran Fondo that winds across the moraine hills surrounding Lake Candia, between technical single tracks and fast dirt roads.
Decollo di San Giacomo. Above the village of Andrate lies this peaceful haven, also one of the historic sites of Italian free flight, ideal for hang-gliding and paragliding take-offs.
Horse Riding. With specialist riding clubs and marked trails, the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater is the perfect setting for lovers of carriage driving, western riding, English-style riding and cross-country riding alike (the Alta Via dell’Anfiteatro offers 110 kilometres of routes).
La Turna. In Montestrutto, this well-equipped and relaxing outdoor area offers rock climbing on the walls of the Lasas, providing a safe and enjoyable experience for enthusiasts, children and families.
Ivrea Canoe Stadium. On the city stretch of the Dora Baltea, a river sports facility with a flow rate of over 20 cubic metres per second, offering genuinely challenging conditions for canoeing.

A new body has been established in the Canavese area, with the aim of improving the physical and mental wellbeing of those who live there. To promote the spread of sporting practice, a culture of movement and outdoor activities, the Morenic Sport Commission has been founded, chaired by MP Mauro Berruto, formerly head coach of the Italian national volleyball team. Officially presented at the headquarters of the Città Metropolitana di Torino, it has already gained the support of around twenty municipalities, some thirty sports associations active across more than twenty disciplines, and various organisations from the Canavese area.
On the board, serving two-year terms, are also the mayors of Ivrea and Candia, Matteo Chiantore and Mario Carlo Mottino, supported by a scientific committee. The initiative aims to create a stable coordination point between public and private bodies, capable of connecting projects designed to attract national and European funding to the area.
The constitutional value of the right to sport becomes the foundation of integrated local policies aimed at people’s wellbeing. Within the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheater, considered a great natural open-air gym, the Commission intends to develop four lines of action: strengthening the link between sport, business and culture; coordinating events and attracting major competitions; promoting physical activity with positive effects on public health; and evaluating the impact of initiatives such as walking groups, including on chronic conditions.
The underlying idea is to treat resources dedicated to grassroots sport not as a cost, but as an investment in the collective wellbeing of communities.
