In the heart of the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre lies an area that combines scenic beauty with geological distinctiveness and, of particular interest, the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of outdoor activities in a truly unique natural setting. This is the Five Lakes Park of Ivrea, established in 2024 by the Piedmont Regional Council. The park has designated over 20 square kilometres of the Colli d’Ivrea — a rocky complex rising from the inner depression of the Ivrea Morainic Amphitheatre — as a protected area.
The spectacular alternation of basins and gentle hills is the result of the Balteo Glacier’s action over the course of nine Quaternary glaciations, and above all the last: the result is one of the areas in Italy where the various forms of glacial erosion can be most clearly recognised. The deep basins carved into the bedrock are home, alongside ponds and peat bogs, to the five lakes that give the Five Lakes Park of Ivrea its name: Lake Sirio (the largest, the most visited, and the only one suitable for swimming), Lake Pistono, Lake Nero, Lake San Michele and Lake Campagna (also known as Lake Cascinette). Surrounding them, evocative woodland and scenic routes to explore while immersing yourself in a fascinating biodiversity.
